You know, we need to be careful because, all teasing aside, there are still some folks with raw nerve ends, and I'd hate to irritate negative feelings.

Even within clans there is that sense of rivalry in some instances. My absolute favourite professor when I was an undergrad taught drama very, very well; very very dramatically. He was a huge and corpulent man who surged into the classroom his first day and grasped the poor lectern which really looked unequal to his needs. Glaring around the room, he announced in his perpetual stage-ready and beautifully strong voice, "My name is Clark! In Scotland there are two ways to spell the name Clark! The Clarke's with an "e" are HORSE THIEVES! We... spell our name WITHOUT an "e." WE are SHEEP THIEVES!" With no further ado, no explanation of expectations etc., he launched into his first lecture, still declaiming in his resonant and sonorous voice. Nobody slept when he lectured!

I still remember him with a deep and abiding love. Now that I'm ordained, I always think of him when I put on clergy/Clark(e) tartan, with or without an "e".

In one of the songs I sing - 'The fall of the house of Airlie' - which is as fine a piece of raising the sympathy vote as any ever created the aggrieved Lady Margaret tells the dastardly Argyle

If the great Sir John had been but at home,
For he is this night with Prince Charlie
Then neither you, nor any Campbell's son
Would have dared to come a plundering of Airlie.

Even though - from most accounts - the incident happened long before Prince Charlie was even born.

If my own grandfather's are anything to go by - previous generations can be untrustworthy, so carrying on a feud simply on the account of ones elders is not the wisest thing to do.

I don't have the luxury of getting my feathers ruffled, because a quick look at my family's various clans points out clearly that nearly all of them were bitter foes of ONE ANOTHER.
My Clans: Guthrie, Sinclair, Sutherland, MacRae, McCain-Maclachlan, MacGregor-Petrie, Johnstone, Hamilton, Boyd, MacDonald-Alexander, Patterson, Thompson. Welsh:Edwards, Williams, Jones. Paternal line: Brandenburg/Prussia.
    Proud member: SCV/Mech Cav, MOSB.
