The main reason why I wear the kilt (and I do it often!) is because I love the beauty of this masculine garment and the comfort it offers. Part of the attraction that makes the kilt exceptional is its combining something very basic, wrapping a cloth around the waist, with its sophisticated nature of pleats and aprons (often finished with a pin, a belt and a buckle).
With your back against the sea, the enemy can come only from three sides.

I concur with the other chaps above! My interest in the culture and my various connections to it, as well as my love of history and appeal of more traditional (old school) fashion; all combine to make me wear what I wear... which includes a kilt.

I wear the kilt, because I am Firstly of Highland ancestry, Secondly because it's extremely versatile and comfortable (I find it to be much more than blue jeans IMHO) and Thirdly, because its an ego boost for me with all the complements that I receive. I tend to lean towards the more "traditionalist" side of my attire (traditional, not historical) but I'm not opposed to throwing on a hoodie, hicking boots, and strunching down my hose for when I'm going out into the woods for a hike with the Hound. I like the traditionalist side, because it looks professional. You know, something that one would wear to a bankers meeting. ;) And I like that look, it suits me well.

Though I don`t have a blood connection to the Scottish highlands, I do have a deep and abiding interest in the culture and the history and all that goes along with it. That is the main reason why I wear the kilt. The other reason would be that it is a damn fine looking garment.

I have been known to respond to the question "why are you wearing a kilt today?" with one of the following:
a) because it's Friday - thanks Mael
b) you wouldn't want to see me without it?

I was out at the pub with my friend Terry, enjoying a pint of IPA, and a discussion of the meaning of duty, honour and heritage. At one point he summed it up with "aye 'tis a powerful piece of cloth". Therein is my reason for wearing it.

I wear the kilt mainly because of the reasons outlined in Creagdhubh's post. I also wear it because I'm a member of a pipe band. However, I'm a member of a pipe band because of the connection to the culture of Highland Scotland. I also like to wear it just because, but would I ever have worn it without the link to the culture? I don't know.

If I wore the kilt as daily street wear, it would be because I wanted to express daily my connection to the culture of Highland Scotland. When I wore it as part of a uniform, it was because of the connection between the bagpipes and Highland Regiments with the culture of the Highlands of Scotland. Whenever I'm the only one kilted, I do wear it as a non-conformist statement. That non-conformist statement is that the culture of the Highland Gael lives on despite the significant attempts to suppress and assimilate the children of the Gael. I certainly do wear it because of the kilt's connection to the culture of Highland Scotland and I wear it for another reason as well. I really like how it looks and how it makes me feel. It makes me look and feel in touch with my roots - the culture of the Highlands of Scotland. Well, more specifically, the Highland Scottish culture of Cape Breton, Nova Scotia.

I wear a kilt because of (1) comfort; (2) acknowledging my Scottish heritage; (3) looks more smart and colourful than boring trousers - much better than wondering "Shall I wear my dark grey trousers or my dark blue trousers today?"
