Please share pics of your rare tartan and tweed kilts.
I’d like to start a thread showcasing rare pattern kilts. There are plenty of kilts out there made from common tartans and many, if not most, of them are beautiful designs. However, I’d like to see those kilts that are of rare and/or unusual tartans or tweeds. These could be unusual versions of clan tartans, seldom seen district tartans, corporate tartans, tweeds that you just don’t see as kilts or any number of other unique patterns. Please keep it isolated to wool tartans or tweeds (as apposed to modern styles) and please describe what makes the pattern rare if you can.
I’d like to start the thread with my most recent kilt. A tank made by forum member Barb Tewksbury. It’s a traditional 8 ½ yd. 16 oz. wool kilt pleated to sett in ancient Red Rose V.S., a very rare tartan woven by D.C. Dalgliesh. Barb worked on my kilt from her home in upstate NY, but also whilst traveling to Cairo, Farafra and Aswan, Egypt.
What makes this tartan rare is the fact that almost all of the existing Rose tartan kilts are of either the Rose hunting modern , the Rose hunting ancient or the Rose modern red. I have never before seen the Red Rose VS woven into a real tartan. The tartan is based on the actual description of the red Rose tartan as described in the Vesterium Scoticum (rather than the accompanying picture).

Now, let's see yours!

Here's the only one I own that would qualify: Maxwell hunting custom weave from DC Dalgliesh. Four-yard box pleat by Matt Newsome.

I guess this would be considered rare. Colquhoun is a very small clan anyway, and everyone wears the modern or ancient colour tartan. This is the "reproduction" Colquhoun tartan by DC Dalgliesh, with the kilt made by Barb Tewksbury (8 yard traditional knife pleat to the sett). I've never seen anyone else with a kilt in this tartan. If they do exist, they are very rare.
The second photo should get extra points because my rare tartan is in the same picture with Shaun's rare tartan. Double win!

Good looking there Tobus. I have plans for a Colquhoun ancient (choose a box pleat to the sett) but you've made me rethink that with your photo. We may be a small clan but we have vast aspirations.
