I agree. I have ventured out in my car kilted many times. When I have stepped out of the car, I have experienced little or no reaction.
I even filled my car with petrol one evening, I was very nervous but no-one seemed to take any notice.
I think most people just think to themselves, 'oh, there's a man in a kilt'. Come to think of it, that's exactly what I'd think.
As for getting into a car, I just smooth the pleats against my behind whilst sitting. Then ensure I'm not trapping any as I close the door.
As ever, Hamish has the perfect solution! and he's all set for the time, many years hence that he is old and infirm !
