Honestly, it wouldn't have been so surreal had this establishment not billed itself as a British pub with Union Jacks all over its website.
The Union Jack is the flag of the United Kingdom.
The Saltire is the flag of Scotland which is the nation which the kilt is usually associated with.
There is ongoing heated debate over here as to what extent if any Scotland will remain associated with the United Kingdom in the coming years. I'm sorry if you got caught up in this argument but it may well explain why kilts are not currently being permitted in a British pub which flies the Union Jack.
Rule 5 prohibits us from discussing the politics as to whether Scotland should or should not be part of the United Kingdom so I will leave it at that and not open a can of worms.

Well at least they recognise a kilt when they see one. One might take some encouragement from that, I suppose.

Cessna, I would be shocked if the fellow at the door knew there had been a referendum. I'm pretty sure that wasn't it.

I have met places (restaurants, bars, clubs, etc.) which demand some "higher class dress code" but this is absolutely first time I ever have heard of a place that demands customers to "dress down" to be allowed to enter.

This pub is in Oklahoma so I doubt that the politics of the UK have anything to do with the kilt ban. This sounds to me as if management just does not like kilts. Kilts are becoming more popular so being a "British" pub I suspect the management is seeing an increase in the number of kilted patrons. This is their way to address their fear that sooner or later every guy will be in a kilt. I have often wondered if kilts became more mainstream if other establishments would lock out kilts in their dress code.

I wonder if this place takes reservations for large groups? If they do call in a reservation for a large group of lets say 15 people. Have 15 guys show up all in kilts. I doubt they would turn down the group when they arrived but I bet management would be steaming mad all evening.

We have a British pub here called "The Pub". The male server staff wear kilts. They wear them wrong but at least they have on kilts.

They were mostly packed full of college age crowds with loud bands on the weekends.
Sherlock's Baker Street Pubs are found in Austin and the one on the north side of town has been the site of Burns Suppers. The pipe band members wore kilts and so did a number, though rather small, of the attendees. They must have a major problem with the management at the one you spoke mentioned.

This situation just keeps getting more and more bizzare. A chain pub in the US, where one location welcomes kilts and Scots gatherings, and another that runs you out? What in the world? Almost every chain restaurant I've ever been to prides itself on providing the same "product" at all its locations. Wonder what the disconnect is? Could it perhaps be connected to the other draconian blue laws they seem to have there?

Interestingly, I noticed while watching the Old Firm cup tie last week that one-half of the stadium was flying Union Jacks almost exclusively, hardly a Saltire to be seen.

The complex nature of nationhood there is difficult for a modern American to come to grips with. 150 years ago it was different here, when a certain general stated "I cannot draw my sword against my Country" and everyone knew he was referring to his State.
