    Think of it this way:

Suppose that there is a spectrum, not of colors, but of perceptions. The "shades" along that spectrum might be labeled as follows:

Normal----Slightly Out of Place----Eccentric---Strange---Deeply Weird and Possibly Dangerous

Wearing a kilt places one squarely into the "Eccentric" part of the spectrum, a place where I am happy to congregate with my fellows.

Except in a suitable environment (renfaires, games, etc. )adding a sword moves you considerably further to the right along that scale.

The goal, I think is to express individualism, without a wholesale departure from societal norms. A kilt is a grand way to do that. Walking around with a spadroon at your side is in my (not so damned humble, thank you very much!) opinion beyond the pale.

'A damned ill-conditioned sort of an ape. It had a can of ale at every pot-house on the road, and is reeling drunk. "
