I've seen insulated pot handle covers that might work. Similar to a condom but made of quilted cloth with a string tie. Something like that might work as long as you don't tie it too tight and cut the circulation off. Also it would have to be tied in a bow and not a knot just in case it had to come off quickly. You wouldn't want to be fussing with a knot in an emergency. Hey, one might even be able to find something like this in plaid.
