Taking scraps of tartan and making......

Rugs.

The one thing a kilt shop has is lots of small pieces of tartan -- strips 1/2 inch wide, and various lengths. The customer does not usually want them.
They are too beautiful to throw into the trash. So what do you do with these strips????

One thing you can do....weave them into a rag rug ...

Or this ... a hooked rug.

Anyone wanna play guess that Tartan?

Bobbie, I'm pretty sure I see Menzie and Gordon in there... but can't quite put my finger on the orange one.

We have had a couple of orange tartans. This could be scraps from the 78th Fraser Highlander tartan.

The hooked rug took quite some time -- I tried to plan the squares, sifting through my basket of tartan scraps (salvaged from the trash cans at the shop)! Poor Steve had to put up with lots of yarn threads all over the house....and me....and him. It is a really thick rug. The tartans are a mixture of different weights, which added to the complexity of getting a rug that would lay flat.

Waste not, want not! Any Scotswoman would be thrilled to see those scraps used so beautifully.

You should be very proud of that gorgeous rug! It will wear like iron, not show the dirt, be comfy underfoot and always look great. Well worth all the threads...

Well, I may have some Scots in my background; I definitely have Welsh and German, and according to my mother, my dedication to re-using is reflective of those heritages, too!

Very nice use of what most people would consider waste. I don't think I could throw them away either!

I love them both, the woven one in particular. My grandmother made hooked rugs from old woolen clothing so you are in good company. I don't have the raw materials resource but could see getting a few coasters, perhaps, from a single kilt's worth of trimmings!
