Have I become a snob????
So, I'm just back to the office after St. Patrick's day Mass and our local St. Patrick's day parade. And I'm really afraid I've become a kilt snob!
Our St. Pat's parade is a small affair, no more than maybe a hundred or so participating and not a lot more than a couple hundred enjoying it from the sidewalks. There was one solitary piper, dozens of guys in bright green sport-coats, hats, and trousers, a few fellows dressed in what I call Leprechaun suits - Green tailcoats with short, knee length, green trousers with white stockings, and maybe a dozen in kilts.
A year ago I remember thinking how cool it was that ANYONE in Mobile, Alabama wore a kilt, EVER.
This year, darn me! I can't help but notice that most of the guys in kilts are also wearing "regular" length jackets (the length you'd wear with trousers - I think some here call them "saxon" jackets?), another man I know had a really nice black, kilt-length jacket, but his stockings were touching his knee caps. Another fellow had on sneakers and white gym socks....
So, have I been RUINED by this web site????????
In all seriousness, I enjoyed the parade and appreciate the spirit of all the guys who participate - its great fun, and I'm always happy to see anyone celebrate their heritage. LORD KNOWS, I'm no "Model" of proper kilt etiquette! But I did find it funny how those things jumped out at me this year - things I never noticed before joining X-Marks!

So... this last paragraph says it all. You are not a snob, just better educated in fashion. You enjoy and appreciate that they are wearing what they are (and likely would not discriminate against them), meanwhile, you have a sense of fashion and sensibility of how things should be worn

This makes me feel guilty for wearing a trouser-cut sport coat with my kilt today, then again, it was only temporary until it warmed up a bit.

Yes…you have fallen victim to Xmarksidosis…commonly known as "kilted eye rolling syndrome".
The only therapy is to just take it all with a grain of salt and remember that not everybody has the same advantages that members of the forum do. Figure that it's a good start for a fella to dive in and get himself a kilt and that he can be excused not having all of the perfect accoutrements to complete the ensemble right from the git-go….remember that it's a process for those of us who weren't born in the land where kilt-wearing is second nature.
Remembering that it is, as the man said, better to light a lamp than to curse the darkness, try to be good natured and convivial and lead the not-quite-correctly-kilted to Xmarks where they will get the low-down on how to best flesh out their outfits so that they might walk in the path of kilted righteousness.
As Zorro (George Hamilton) sed in the movie: "There is no sin in being poor; only in dressing poorly!"
Best,

AA is so right, sometimes, like soldiers have to do on occasion, you have to go with what you have got, not what you ought to have! Do the best you can, eyes open, mouth shut and take note of the good ideas as well as the bad and enjoy the day.
We do tend to forget here that getting kitted out with kilt attire is an expensive enterprise that does take time, a lot of time for some. However, taking ones time does allow one to learn what is actually required, as opposed to what you might have originally thought you required.

Unless you prefer green jackets, a green kilt jacket may be a bit pricy for one day a year.

Pants is only a present tense verb here. I once panted, but it's all cool now.

Consider your angst from the other guys point of view. You set the standard to emulate, for anyone that studied your ensemble. Snob or no,t you got your kit correct and can take pleasure in that.

Had to laugh today. Ran into two gents with the pleats in front. Talked with the first and he had just purchased the garment and really appreciated the advice to do a 180 degree shift. The second, with beer in hand and a smirk on his face, said "I know what you're going to say, but I don't give a sh**." His girlfriend then elbowed him in the ribs and said, "I told you." I replied that it is the accepted fashion, he did a fore and aft swing, we shook hands, and had a good laugh. Hey, at least he was enjoying the freedom of the kilt. Happy St. Pat's everyone.
