Absolutely bang on the button there David for argyll and diced hose and TWEED day attire, it is not THCD. Sorry to be a tad precise here, but its best to be perfectly clear, lest the "what ifs" and "what abouts" start appearing.

    1) Stating whether or not you'd wear tartan or diced hose with day wear (tweeds) does not answer my question which is whether you think that choice is traditional or whether it has become historical. Those are two very different questions. I think some people wear them and look smashing. Again, what I'm trying to determine is whether they're acting in accordance with accepted traditional Highland conventions when they do so or whether they are making an idiosyncratic, eccentric, theatrical or indeed, historical sartorial choice.

    2) Hose with a pattered top cuff are irrelevant to the thread. They have a long history among sportsman and are worn with country wear by kilted and non-kilted gentlemen alike. I like them and wear them but they have absolutely nothing to do with this discussion.
Going back to your original post to answer the questions posed and only the questions posed:

So what say the traditionalists among the rabble? Is this combo still traditional or has it crossed the line into historical? Are the folks who choose this combo exhibiting personal flair or committing a faux pas?

Bordering on historical; not THCD; yes; no.

So... let's continue this. Based on this thread and a couple others with these discussions:

Hair sporrans for anything other than formalwear - NOT THCD
    Glengarry caps - NOT THCD
Bonnets (Balmoral and Tam)- Still THCD, but fading away
wearing clothing too smart for the occasion - NOT THCD
wearing a belt with waistcoat but no dirk - NOT THCD
Belt with dirk for daywear - NOT THCD
Bowties for other than formalwear - NOT THCD
    Flat caps - NOT THCD
Wearing THCD for something other than a Highland type event or special occasion - NOT THCD

** Note, none of the above relate to pipe bands or military

This is an interesting question but broadens the scope of thread considerably right after I attempted to narrow it. Perhaps we can spin the spin off questions into another thread?

Indeed, broadening things when trying to narrow. Very much in line with the idea of the original question though. Perhaps I shall create a new thread.

I wonder if some cleaver soul could transfer my reply( post 36) to the new thread? It would put things back on an even keel.

    Done. Thank you.
