Small crowns are very much 'in' in the Royal Regiment of Scotland. I would aim to shape it like the one in the lower photo:

We can shape our bonnets to whatever shape we choose, but I think that we need to remember that we are wearing civilian attire and to my mind the rather severe military look that we could go for with the bonnet, needs to be watered down, just a tad.
