I'm surprised that hire shops don't attach removable button on linings to all their hire kilts, along with a couple of stitches so they will know if they have been removed. It would be much easier to launder the linings.

It is said that a lady never accidentally exposes her underwear, the same should be true for a gentleman, so who is to know, other than members of this forum?
On reflexion I edited out the last sentance but you must have read my post before I did that, so I hope I didn't cause any offence I prefer to wear heavyweight kilts and actually like the feel of the material against my bare legs. I also like to feel the swing of the pleats, so I don't see the need for a lining. However, I never thought about it in the context in which you describe and I can now fully understand your need. As for exposing my underwear - well !
The Kilt is my delight !

None at all, we are all entitled to our opinion and are all different, I'm sure there are more who feel the way you do than share my opinion. However I really struggled with military kilts in cadet days and could not wait to get out of them as there was no protection either from the kilt or the hair shirt that went with it. As a slight aside, even in Scotland, standing at attention for long periods of time in the summer heat with a large amount of heavy weight material wrapped high around your waist along with a hair shirt and military jacket was frequently too much for many who would pass out as a result.
If you are going to do it, do it in a kilt!

Okay…you can go find special shirts with tails down to your knees OR some special "slip" that somebody wants to sell you for $$$$ OR you can start re-tailoring t-shirts or women's skirts or undergarments…OR you can just go to walmart/kmart/target/whatever and pick up a three pack of dark boxers for under $10.

If it really doesn't matter what you may or may not have on under your kilt….and THAT gets discussed ad nauseum here…what's the difference?

I respect your opinion, but my conclusion on the matter is very different. I do think there is value for this topic to come up from time to time, because clearly, it needs to. The way I figure it, is that given the mythos associated with what kilt wearers should or shouldn't have underneath, it becomes a form of validation for some, that they're not the only ones to be wearing a {slip, boxers, long shirt, etc, etc} underneath their kilt.

Then, there are those who truly don't know, but would like to, what some "acceptable options" (take that how you will) might be.

But being that many of us here are a rabble of DIYers, tinkerers, explorers, perfectionists, inventors, master Internet researchers, etc... you're going to get everyone chiming in as to what they all feel is the best solution to a problem. And we see that not just with this, but pretty much all topics.

All that said, this is going to be one of the only safe places a man can go and discuss the finer points of undergarments without fear or shame. It's not like you'd broach the topic when you're at the pub with your friends. (Well, I suspect that to be so, anyway. I can't remember having very many underwear discussions outside of this forum)... So yeah, whatever you wear or don't wear is fine. But I do enjoy the exploration. And for the record, I don't care for three-packs of boxers for $10... I really do prefer silk ones. And if anyone knows where I can get a three-pack of THOSE for a good price, please let me know. ;-)

I think its a good idea for some people, as mentioned, hire kilts and various medical problems. Its not for everyone and none of my kilts give cause for me to use one, but the option is there and I think its nice that its known about.

Just don't go for Thai silk ones, the shape and sizing seems to bear little relation to the human form, male or female.

Thank you for the tip. I have just got one to try and I agree. For me it is too long as standard for wearing with my casual kilts (I do have short legs,28") but I can just roll the elastic top over a couple of times to reduce the length, or leave it in its original length for my formal kilts. Good call.
