And it does rather depend on the pub as well as the tie and the shirt (not forgetting the kilt) ...
I remember going into one bar in Helsinki with a friend and ordering a couple of beers – we were handed a couple of bottles, tops flipped off – we waited a moment and got the comment: "D'you want glasses, then?" – to which, hastily, "No, no, of course not!" and we sidled off and enjoyed our beers.
To each place – and to each kiltwearer – their own style :-)

Indeedy - I was out for a meal with friends yesterday in Edinburgh and there was a gent there wearing exactly that; unsurprisingly looked as smart as they come, and utterly appropriately dressed. Shame my kit is currently in transit!

I thank you all for your comments. Today I went to the Castro district of San Francisco with friends to help celebrate the Supreme Court ruling on gay marriage. I was dressed like this:

My job isn't very formal & I don't go to church so I don't get to dress up much . On occasion I dress nice with my "church clothes" & a tie on my day off while I run errands & such just because I feel like it . It's amazing how differently some people treat me when I'm wearing a tie despite the beard & half inch plugs in my ear lobes .

Not one bit. Judging from the photos I'd say everyone looked perfect for one helluva good reason to raise a few glasses.

Um, well, compared to the bartenders, and just going by square inches of clothing worn, then, yes, I would say you were a tad bit overdressed.

    Quite right, Downunder!

Without wishing to sound snooty, in a civilian world, a customer, client, guest to a pub, meeting, gathering, high society ball should not compare their attire requirements to the "uniform" requirements of staff. Staff have a job to do within the employers wishes and follow dress codes of their own specific requirements. Guests are not bound by similar requirements, although an understanding of civilian dress conventions is helpful. Which is what this thread is about.
