I myself would much rather have my kilts pleated to the stripe, than pleated to a different sett than the actual cloth.

Rocky, how do you guys pleat this tartan on your casual kilt? I'm trying to figure out my next one, and IOS is a top contender. It's just beautiful.

    With 'cheating'?

Seriously, it makes me wonder just at what point in the yardage can one no longer pleat strictly to the sett, but have to resort to 'cheating'. I suppose every tartan would have a different break-point.

Technically, it can be done on LARGE setts, but you may only get 10 or 12 pleats in a kilt. It's a balancing act... if the length of cloth is finite (8 yards, 5 yards, etc), then the deeper each pleat, the wider each pleat must be. The shallower the pleat, the narrower each pleat can be.
