Like all of us, I've been asked the question more times than I can remember but, I did have one experience that went beyond the question. We attended a Christmas party a couple of years ago at the home of friends. Our hostess' elderly aunt was at the party and when Susan and I walked in and the aunt saw me in a kilt, she immediately walked over to me and lifted up my kilt while saying "What do you have under there?" (A lot of people got a good look at my upper legs, etc.). The hostess was horrified and the 'eighties something' aunt couldn't understand what the problem was since I was 'flaunting myself' by wearing a kilt and she was 'just curious'.

It was certainly an awkward situation but the rest of the evening went well and, of course, I avoided the aunt like the plague.

Simon Fraser fought as MacShimidh, a Highland chief… wrapped and belted in a plaid over the top of his linen shirt, like his ordinary kinsmen. He put a bonnet on his head, and stuck the Fraser emblem, a sprig of yew, in it. With the battle cry, A'Chaisteal Dhunaidh and the scream of the pipes, they charged to battle. In relation to Father Bills, story we had an incident here in Norfolk a couple days ago.
A lady was seen floating in the river past a pub. And was fished out by customers and staff and given CPR. she is recovering in hospital.

    The public services sent....
    An Ambulance, two paramedics
a rapid response vehicle ( paramedic in a car)
    An Ambulance officer (separate car)
The Air Ambulance, Doctor, paramedic and pilot
And TEN police cars!!! Some with one officer some with two.

Like the wait staff in that pub, a piper playing in a crowded pub has both hands occupied and is vulnerable to these assaults.

It happens all the time: you're hired to march about in the pub while playing, and the drunk women see it as a perfect opportunity to do some kilt-lifting.

As people have been saying, if a man did the same to a woman there would probably be an arrest.

This probably why the busking piper in Norwich city centre stands in a bricked up doorway of M+S, he's protected on 3 sides by wall.

I have been able to avoid and side step the issue with wit and calmness when dealing with folks (mostly women) that don't know me. That has worked out to my advantage, as I am kilted at events during home football games here in Oxford.
The one time a male (now former long term friend) assaulted me in public while I was kilted, I stood and yelled (land surveyors train to be heard clearly at 1200 feet) and all other noise halted as I said, "touch me again and draw back a stump!" I hate to admit I had my sgian in hand.
This was at the last biker rally I attended in May. I will have to resolve the issue with him eventually. If he ever apologizes or admits his error, it will go more smoothly. I know the loss of a friend will effect him more than it will me. My other biker friends at the rally have stated their support of my outburst. They offer excuses for him that contradict my scruples and sense of morals though.

I've noticed that if I respond to The Question (almost always, incidentally, from a woman) by pointing out that asking about someone else's underwear (or not) in public is surely sexual harassment, certainly if done by a man to a woman, they do NOT look ashamed or apologize but rather assert "No, it's not", or "Don't be so touchy" – in other words, the classic response of the Male Chauvinist Pig when rebuked for harassing a woman.

    Tarheel,

Perhaps I have missed this info before, but what kind of motorcycle do you ride? Just curious. My brother threatens me if I ever ride something other than a Harley. So on rare, very rare now, occasions, I ride one of his. (He has 5.) But he thinks that wearing a kilt is weird if one is not Scottish.

    Have a good week.
