Hello Bill. Education is your field of expertise, so I bow to your greater knowledge and experience. You know the field, so to speak and you are more than aware of the risk of giving the wrong impression to the youngsters, as you have made clear and I cannot argue the point. I can also see that the atmosphere that you and the children are mixing is less likely to give the wrong impression(the costume/fancy dress bit) than in other more relaxed party atmospheres that many children will see the kilt worn at. I have my concerns though.

As always Jock, I respect your opinions and appreciate your sharing. I think it will go well here. I'm not going out to parties either, just meeting youngsters at the door, so it's fairly subdued in presentation.
That makes an interesting point though; I'd not wear it to a party at this time of year. The mood and inference at such events is indeed often a bit different and more goofy and raucous. Not the place for a kilt to be seen seriously.

Interesting discussion, especially the points made by Jock Scot and Father Bill. Like many others, I have never thought of the kilt as a costume. It's a way for me to show pride in my Scottish heritage. Because of that, I would not wear it to a Halloween event.

I cherish my ancestry, AND my kilt outfit
Since I'm the one who started the contraversy (about wearing a kilt for halloween). Let me clear the air, here. Everybody who knows me, knows of my love for Scotland, and all things celtic. I think me wearing my kilt, etc for Halloween is an extension of that. Besides, I'm building a castle, flying the saltyre, rampant lion, an "Erin go Bragh" and an Ireland flag. Also displaying some shields I made out of laminate, with Scottish crests on them (from my wife's vinyl lettering machine). My framed family crest will be right above the castle entrance, flanked by the other shields/crests. Plus, I will have bagpipe music playing. Because of this, I won't be dressing up like I'm from Spain, or Russia....I'm going to dress like a Scottish Highlander. I'm looking forward to it.

Yes I will be wearing a kilt on Halloween, because I plan to spend much of that evening at the village pub.

For me, part of the fun of halloween is dressing up as something that I'm not - since I have Scottish ancestry and am a highland dancer, I wouldn't choose to dress in that way for halloween! I'd much rather pretend to be Wonder Woman.
I also don't consider my kilt to be a costume piece. It's something that means a lot to me and that I take seriously.
My 2 cents worth

I really love this thread full of different opinions, perspectives, and debates respectfully.
Here's my opinion on this one.
I'm a full-time kilt wearer.. So, I simply replace my jeans/shorts for my kilts for the months so far. I simply incorporated my kilts to be part of my Halloween ideas.
The way I figure the million of children/adults in America have no problem continue wearing their shorts, their pants/trousers, skirts, dresses, and etc for their Halloween costumes. Why can't we too in our kilts?
For an example. There's going to be a lot of people dress up as the vampires no question... Instead being one of them. We can be the Scottish vampires by replacing the boring black pants with a black kilt for fun.
Kilt itself is not a costume but a garment. That's fine I do get it, but to treat it like as if it's a rare religion sacred object is a bit silly, IMO.

Oh, I will (take photos)
I will take photos, you can count on that. The castle is well under way. By using a soldering gun, and crafter's heat gun, I've been able to make the styrofoam look like real rock walls, with mortar joints. I'll show photos of it being built, and in action, on Halloween night, somewhere on this site. Thanks for the interest.
