Years ago I put what I carry on a diet because I was wearing my pockets out before the trousers showed much wear.
Out in the wild I need all the stuff and wear cargo pocket modern kilts. Heavy items carry a lot easier from the side pockets than up front bouncing around as I walk.
In town I only carry what I will use. The "might needs" I keep handy in my truck.
For walking with the dog, I have a dedicated sporran to carry the treats and cleanup stuff.
My ungainly key ring I suspend with a carbineer from my belt keeper loop with traditional kilts. The ring separates so that for more formal occasions he smaller "vital" keys ring fits nicely in the sporran with the wallet.

Pants is only a present tense verb here. I once panted, but it's all cool now.
