I just re-read the entire thread again.
Why? Because it runs the gamut of opinions, ideas and ideals about the kilt and how it fits into Scottish culture, heritage and traditions, both within and without Scotland.
In the end, as always, be respectful, but be yourself.

Being in the majority of members not brought up in the tradition of wearing highland attire I don't think I had a lightbulb moment but a slow steady understanding of how Scots and experienced diaspora wear highland attire. With the bombardment of visuals of every imaginable take on the attire through the media, folks outside the culture need an example of how Scots actually dress. This forum has been a very valuable resource. I think we as a whole appreciate this information even if we all don't adhere to the conventional ideas.

I've had many light bulb moments because this forum is full of insightfull threads but the lights turned on for me when I descovered coloured hose were preferable to cream in many traditional styles of highland dress. And that a shorter kilt looks better...
So I went from this...

To this...
...
wish I could rotate this pic...

My comment wasn't all in jest!
There have been many "lightbulb moments" in Jock's various threads and posts over the years. Yes the 'telling comments' thread was one.
This entire forum has been a continuous beacon, from which I can't single out a particular post or thread.
The biggest visual impressions, perhaps, have been from the various threads about Prince Charles' dress, and the thread of vintage photos.

But better accessoriesed (if that's a word) in the first pic. No single light bulb moment for me, just a gradual brightening, particularly with regard to being sensitive to others feelings about culture and tradition.

1. There is no historical context for the Jacobite shirt.
2. Great kilts are only appropriate for reenacting/living history.
3. The mind-boggling number of kilt wearers that go regimental!

After thinking about buying a kilt I found this site, and due to not being well, I spent almost an entire day reading just about every thread here. Not so much as a light bulb but an enormous searchlight.
