I used to wear them with my leggins for a bit of color and to help keep 'em sagging down when I was a Mountain Man in the 1830s (re-enactments)and sometimes a matching sash either over or in place of my belt. The belt by the way is now my great kilt belt--3" leather with a round hand-forged iron buckle.
