Looking at Canadian thistle range maps it ranges from Alaska, Canada, and the bulk of the USA minus a few south-eastern states, I'd guess that despite Californias banning it's likely still growing all over the wilds of (mostly) northern California.

Well, with a name like ThistleDown I guess I just have to respond, Jamie. Both in my garden.
Milk thistle. My wife uses this pic on her calling card.

Scots thistle. This one actually achieved 3 metres in height.

I've no stock photos of them in my garden, and it's too soon yet, If I remember you'll have to wait until May at the earliest if not June - July.

The wood is a Madrone sapling I found years ago, that grew in a spiral due to a wild grapevine encircling it.
