Good to know! I wonder if a 16oz is lurking ...out there...

Thanks for asking this! I had the exact same question. I had no idea what the protocol / etiquette was with wearing a tartan other than that of your clan. Looks like the Ayrshire will be. Y next purchase!

Looks like Dagliesh does the 16oz version, and THAT is the $$$ that I remember ....

Yes USA Kilts has Ayrshire in House Of Edgar 13oz wool, very nice kilt fabric.
I also noticed Auld Scotland and Auld Lang Syne, two more "universal tartans".
Auld Scotland is particularly lovely. I first saw it in this photo of a display at Lochcarron.

According to the book "Scots Kith and Kin", Barr is most commonly found in the Ayrshire district. If you were in our shop, we'd suggest that tartan to you.

One popular source for tartans is the comprehensive list by Philip Smith. He links Barr to the Paisley Tartan. I don't vouch for the sources but the Surname database does say the name may have originated in Renfrewshire which is Paisley territory.

The Scottish Tartan Authority list also shows barr linked to the Paisley District Tartan.

I am surprised to not find a New Zealand national tartan in any of my primary reference sources. Why have the Kiwis been slow to act on this? All sorts of regions and organizations have their own tartan now!
But much of the advice here is sensible, and I have little more to add except to encourage you to keep your chin up, and do what Rob Roy would have done: wear any tartan he pleased. Like most old-time Highlanders. Good enough for him, good enough for me!

Well, live and learn! So there IS a NZ tartan. I wish my books were as up to date as this forum.
