My first kilt is finally here!

Pibroch Scotland makes some beautiful leather sporrans and each comes with a unique 'whang' sporran strap (no buckle). I bought the Drover sporran and asked for a deeper hanging loop so I can wear it on a 2" belt. They are all handmade and all but the Drover come with an attached 'siller poke' (coin purse). Sure, I'll be getting another from them.

Yes I think I love them all but the Gorse and the Bracken are both contending for my next sporran. I found them accidentally, although I can no longer remember how exactly. I also like the fact that--with the exception of the Laird--there are absolutely no metal parts, they are 100% leather, save for the decorative buttons on the Laird.

I'd never heard of "hunting" sporrans before encountering this website, though I see they were available in Edinburgh in the 1930's. They don't appear to be available today in the UK except on eBay from Pakistan, at least a quick search hasn't turned any up.

What puzzles me is that I can understand the benefit of no tassels for hunting but cannot see why you would then put shiny metal bits on them to reflect the (occasional in Scotland anyway) sunlight and scare the prey. A plain brown one on a belt to slide round to the side when lying on a hillside watching the deer seems to me to be all you really need as long as it is big enough for the midge and tick repellant.
