Jo Ann's Fabrics has a large safety pin, in a fake gold and silver color that is called a "Kilt Pin"
Most any large fabric store in close proximity to a private school that requires plaid skirts is going to stock them. Of course the recent events in the world, everyone might be in short supply.......

A quick google image search for kilt pins will give you lots of styles for the old horse blanket pin you are looking for.

Go to Amazon and do a search for "blanket pin" and you should find all manner of such pins in a variety of sizes and colors. Not too expensive if you are not going fancy.
