Well, we survived. Actually the storm was not as fierce, for us, as forecast. I understand it was a bit rougher North of us and on the Western Isles, but I have not heard of any real problems about.

Usual stuff, British media is full of hype, and impending disaster scenarii, like the south of England sea level is rising because of "climate change".

It's not, it's sinking, because Scotland is still rising from having lost the weight of the ice sheets in the ice age.

It's not what happens that matters, it's what people believe happened.

Actually the 2nd quote was more important.

That was our excellent history teacher, that repeated this to us, and he was right.

Forecasters tend to overstate the impending problem. Probably they have memories of a much-quoted occasion when they failed to notice an approaching hurricane.

Especially when the hurricane didn't occur, the wind speeds were high but technically not a hurricane.

Are we talking about the "Michael Fish" hurricane(October 1987)? I was on the Sussex/Kent border at the time. If it wasn't a hurricane it was damn close, my word that was some event! Acres of mature oaks , beech and Ash trees were laid waste. An unforgettable episode!

Yep that's correct, people forget Michael Fish, did forecast very strong winds, and was technically correct in saying there wouldn't be a hurricane.
It was just that it happened to be the strongest winds in 3 centuries. My sailing boat sank in a protected sheltered mooring in the Norfolk Broads.

Well Storm "Conor" is giving us quite a lashing at the moment and its been going all night. Torrential rain and thunder and lightening too. We will have trees down for sure after this one has blown over. Still nothing to get excited about though as its just the normal Highlands in the winter type of stuff.
