What I do mind though is the basically orange laces, be they the leather or nylon supplied. Just plain weird. When I get home I am going to soak them in neatsfoot oil to darken and soften them.

That's exactly what I did. In my photos above, they had been slightly darkened (and well softened) by neatsfoot oil. They have continued to darken over time, as I've worn them and re-oiled them.
