Very sharp. I enjoy when creativity is used in a way that fits into the whole. Those oak leaf 'leaves' on the hunter are brilliant. Really make it special.
Great design!
I'm contemplating a leather cantle for my next project. What do you use for the cantle form/foundation?
Thanks!
My leather cantles are made out of...leather! In the first hunter I made, I thought that a frame was necessary, so I integrated some brass wire...but this proved cumbersome, difficult to stitch and unnecessary.
Using the natural stiffness of leather is more than enough. I use vegetable tanned leather which is 1.8 mm thick. If you count the layers at the top you have:
1) The base layer
2) The semi-circular layer above the targe
3) The top layer which wraps around the edge on both sides...so two layers
That gives you 4 layers of 1.8 mm...so about 7.5 mm leather, plus the stitching, which makes it more than stiff enough without adding any metal.

Are you accepting commissions for similar sporrans?
Erm, I've never really given that much thought...This is a hobby for me, but I'm always up to a challenge!
As I've mentioned in other posts, I'm going to have to start selling some of my creations, to keep the wife happy and make some space at home! I was thinking of selling one of them in the "for sale" section of the forum - as I can do as a registered hobbyist.
