I second this thought!!! Mixing up Calgary and Edmonton is like mixing up a kilt with a skirt!

Christmas party...
Well now...I guess we won't mention either the Flames OR the Oilers then, eh?
Okay, a Company Christmas party -- I don't think a full formal outfit would be appropriate for that.
SO, on that note, I would go with a nice shirt with or without tie (your call), but what about a turtleneck? I wear a turtleneck with my kilt sometimes, and it looks good -- a "sophisticated casual" look.
I would say a "no hair" sporran -- save that for formal wear. And colour will determine with what belt you go with -- remember that brown is more casual, usually reserved for "day" wear, and you would need brown shoes and a brown sporran, which might elminate your black flashes.
Hamish, what say you?
Cheers,
T.

Sorry, I couldn't resist this comment. If it has short selves it's not a dress shirt, no matter what the tag says.
Shirt snob.

I agree with Hamish's advice but you need to find out more about corporate culture and define "semi-formal". I recently missed the mark at a company event that was billed as semi-formal. I figured that since representatives from "Harley-Davidson home office" would be in attendance it would truely be a dress event. In this case it meant jeans and a non-faded t shirt with a casual jacket. I was way overdressed. Check with your co-workers about dress code for the event. A nice sweater might be just the ticket for some company Christmas gatherings. Do take the advice about avoiding short sleeve shirts with ties though, they just look awful.

Jamie,
That was some sensible advice [don't worry, I won't tell anybody you were sensible. Your secret's safe with me].
Turns out that semi-formal for this particular workplace is much like it was for you. The exact advice I got was 'You probably shouldn't wear jeans. Or at least not jeans with holes in them, anyway.'
This is a relief, since I didn't want to be underdressed, or to otherwise embarrass or inconvenience my date [more than she is necessarily embarassed by being seen in public with a mug like me].
I think I'm going to go the sweater route, no sporran. I'll still post a pic for you to critique on thursday, but forget you ever heard the words 'semi-formal' when you do so, please.
And to all of you shirt snobs out there... I happen to LIKE the look of a short sleeved shirt with a tie. I hereby proclaim that all of you are old farts.
