As a Presbyterian minister I tend to wear my kilt for worship on special occasions - Christmas, Easter, St. Andrew's Sunday, etc.. My "congregation" at the Retirement Community where I work are quite used to seeing me kilted as I often show up for work on Fridays in a kilt.

The "look at me aspect" is not a concept I would ever seek or endorse and I sure most kilt wearing Scotsmen would feel the same. For that very reason I tend to wear muted tartans on a daily basis. Sure I am as happy as anyone to accept any compliments people choose to make, but particulary in the context of a church congregation, each week it is mostly the same people and any novelty value will have worn off by the second viewing. I think I am more likely to attract comments locally if I wasn't kilted, people get used to it.
If you are going to do it, do it in a kilt!

I go to church kilted and have done for well over ten years. My parish is fairly small but I have also worn a Kilt when visiting larger parishes and never had a negative experience. I am a Lector, Cantor, and Pastoral Musician so I'm pretty conspicuous. I don't think I have ever approached my liturgical duties or my kilt wearing as "Look at Me" and I don't believe any of the members of my Parish see me that way either. Any style of clothing can elicit a "Look at Me" response depending the behavior and attitude of the person in question. I once knew a real ostentatious clothes horse who insisted that Jesus would have worn a Brooks Brothers suit so he wore one even though his wife and children dressed in hand-me-down clothes. He definitely looked like he was saying "Look at Me". I fully realize, however, that every person needs to search their own soul and the needs and feelings of their community in regards to kilt wearing.
