Since doublets and mess jackets have been brought up here, I think it's a good time to point out that the question was about "daywear coatees". Some of these choices are solidly in the evening wear category, even though they may fit the bill of short-waisted jackets. There's something about the cut of a mess jacket that would look rather odd as daywear. I must admit to having wondered myself what a mess jacket or doublet would look like in a tweed material, with horn buttons and flap pockets.
But then, when I really think about it, I realise that part of what makes these evening jackets look like evening jackets has more to do with things like standing collars (doublets), or deep plunging lapels (mess jackets, Prince Charlie jackets), or short waists (all of them). If we take one of those features and put it on a daywear jacket, we can probably get away with it still looking like a daywear jacket. But take too many, and it looks like an evening jacket trying to pose as a daywear jacket. Or it looks like a military uniform. There is a fine line there that can get crossed, and of course that fine line probably differs for each person.
