Good for you!! What a gorgeous tartan (not that I'm biased or anything )

For sure when I've been wearing my 16 and 18 ounce kilts for weeks and then put on the 13oz it feels strangely insubstantial.

But I think it's just whatever a person gets used to. Because if I've been wearing the 13oz regularly it feels normal, and if I then put on the 8-yard 18oz kilt it feels like I'm trying to wrap a sleeping bag around my waist! The uber-heavy kilt feels unimaginably heavy and bulky.

Just to be clear, I have 13oz and 16oz kilts both with around 6.5 to 7 yards in them. I prefer that over 8+ yards.

But when I wanted a military style kilt I had to go all in, and get the extra heavy cloth and the full 8 yards. It's a KILT!

That is indeed a very nice tartan, but I can only find pictures showing two colors of hose being worn with it, white and oatmeal. I personally don't care for white hose, what other colors would work with this tartan please?

On a side note, would someone please identify this tartan with the Red bagpipes?

Hose colors with the County Cavan tartan? Anything goes but personally I would go with a nice deep brown, black, navy, ancient red, brick red, perhaps even mustard, dark gray, ancient blue, tan. Lord I think I could have fun with this one. Enjoy, post pics. I usually try to stick with either red, brick red, or mustard flashes with darker hose colors, and just an inch or less showing out from beneath my hose turnover.

Oh boy, yeah, I have quite a few hose colors in mind for this kilt starting with a pair bison hose I already own, I plan to do red, also the lode green from house of cheviot will look nice, most definitely mustard, hell maybe even cinnamon (really orange) color hose. I already own those, so I'll check when I get back stateside. It'll be a few months before I get to see the kilt in person due to service commitments, but I plan to wear it...a lot when I get home.

About hose-colours, if I were to get a Cavan kilt (which I would like to do) the first thing I'd wear with it are the hose I already have, Bison, Royal Blue, and Ancient Blue (all from Cheviot).

But if wearing my new Cavan kilt, for sure at the next Games I'd head to the booth that carries a wide variety of Cheviot hose and see what looks best. Sometimes it's not what I expect!

My general aesthetic is to avoid the kilt's major colours, the ground-colours one could say, with the hose.

Cavan is unlike so many tartans which have a basic two-colour foundation, but has several colours in fairly even proportions.

I can see Cavan as part of a lovely tweedy earth-toned outfit.

    White hose... meh...

I thought I'd try a little trick that artists do to figure out what's wrong with a particular passage in a painting, and to get an insight into the best solution: cover up that passage, stare at the picture for a few moments, then pull the hand away. The problem will leap out to your eye because while that area is covered your brain fills it in with the ideal solution.

Applying that to the Cavan hose issue, here's one of the photos above but cropped to not show hose or necktie.

What hose does your mind fill in?

I'll toss my ante into the kitty. I'd go with mustard colored hose and dark grey flashes to complete this ensemble.
Combed hair, brushed teeth, clean shave and broad smile for the upper part of the photo.

I tried visualising that and for whatever reason my eye sees a different shade of yellow, I'm not sure how to describe it, but a soft muted yellow...

    Here it is!

I'll have a go at this Richard. I've changed my mind on the garter anyway.

The color is more pale than the catalog when "snipping" the photo. These garters for certain with either the plain mustard or hose I have shown above.

I was thinking these as well. I like the earthiness of the subdued green.
