    Gloves are tricky business but I have a few rules I follow. I keep a pair of whites in my jacket (inner lining pocket) just in case.
    Wear gloves if, during a black or white tie function:
    you are an official usher for an event or serving any refreshments (food or drink as a host member, not a contracted server).
    you are receiving or presenting an award.
    you are a dignitary for the function (including honored guest).
    you are presenting or attending a flag (Honor guard).
    you are an escort to an elder (assisting my wife's grandmother for instance).

    I am mindful that I don't have to keep my gloves on during the entire event. Removal is a matter of timing as the event changes mood from formal to business then to festive.
