I am sorry Fedgunner, but I believe that your information is incorrect.

P/V stands for a fabric which is a blend of Polyester and Rayon. There is only one weaver of Kilt quality P/V fabric and that is Marton Mills. They do product fabrics with a tuck selvedge.

They also produce fabrics with a fringed selvedge for those fabrics intended for uses other than kilts.

On the left is Marton Mills PV with a tuck selvedge and on the right with a fringed selvedge.

I have looked over this thread over and over again and it really gets my blood boiling. I have truly decided to not let the price be the deciding factor. For me it's quality. Full stop. No more cheap buys. No more 'made in China'. No more plastic. What ever happened to quality? Authentic? Longevity? Pride?

I completely agree with you, but, BUT, a goodly dollop of patience, knowledge------real knowledge------, time and loot is required before most can achieve what you desire.

Nothing happened to them. They are still out there, but as always, they come at a premium. It takes some education and research to recognise quality and know where to find it.

Garth, you have to remember that the kilt posted by the OP is not, and was never intended to be, a high end custom kilt. It is made in Pakistan out of a wool blend fabric. These are made and sold in bulk and intended for the mass market.

When buying one of these you are getting what you pay for. These companies offer them to anyone who will respond to their mass mailings. I get about 5 or 6 offers a week from the Pakistani makers offering these for about $12.00 each.

$12.00 won't even buy 1/2 yard of quality kilt fabric.

They are what they are. Quality and pride are still out there. These are not sold as quality garments (except perhaps by some overzealous retailers).

All above quotes are true and correct. I guess what got to me was when I was out shopping yesterday, I was on the prowl for a new rashie, the sun protection shirt surfers wear. Every surf shop I went to at one of the world's surfing mecca, Margaret River in Western Australia, all recognized surf brands are all made in China. What was proudly made in Australia is now made elsewhere. Workmanship of poor quality and of course they were still asking for an outrageous amount. I was happy to not make a purchase and politely told the manager my reasons.

Well yes that is true Steve, but, BUT we get members on this website------sadly including the OP---------who spend their hard earned loot on low grade kilt attire thinking in their ignorance what they are purchasing is the real deal, only to be disappointed when the realisation dawns on them that they have been duped.

Sadly, too often, those new to the kilt who may have rushed into their purchases read conversations like we are having here is too late. It is, I am afraid, not an uncommon occurrence. It is not an easy thing to point these inconvenient facts out to those who suddenly find what they have bought is not of the quality they thought it was. Before I continue, I fully accept there are those who are quite happy with their low quality purchases, but..........

I don't know what the answer is, but at least conversations like this thread, may help warn those that are thinking of venturing into the kilt world and that those rose tinted spectacles need removing, their enthusiasm to get started needs controlling and more careful research is needed before parting with their hard earned cash.

Aha! that's it Jock. We pass an international law that before anyone can buy their first kilt they must register to X Marks and read every post. You must then certify that they have done so and issue their kilt buyers license.

    I just could not resist.
