    what they all said..

When i was going thru the same process, i purchased claret hose. Wore them once to formal and haven’t since. I fell back to black and dark charcoal, a nod perhaps to “socks with tuxedo” thinking.
I have lots of hose colours and should break out of my stodginess.
Diced is on the wish list.

I really favor argyle hose for formal wear. I definitely am not a fan of black or charcoal hose for any occasion, they are just very dark and look sort of like somebody stole my suit pants. I feel like bold colors are an important element in kilt hose. That doesn't mean they have to be garish, just that they should offer some visual interest, which dark solids really don't do for me. I like the "marled" hose with the heathery blend of two colors, strong solid colors, and even shooting socks with fancy-pattern turn-downs. All offer more interest than the black/charcoal shades. After all, your jacket, vest, and shoes are likely already black (not to mention your tie). So some contrast is probably in order.

For me it's a solid darker coloured hose that compliments my kilt. Not black, but I have a dark navy pair for one kilt, and then a nice lovet green for another kilt.

    Just for curiosity

Thank you for replying to my post I always look forward to what Jock and Steve have to say because they are so knowledgeable but I find that there are quite a lot of you who have loads of information and advice to give which is great. I was brought up by a highland father but even so I slip up, always a learning curve plus my wife makes sure I look right with a ladies eye. I personally don't wear diced or Argyll I wear tartan cuffs on solid colour.

I don't own argyle socks, mainly because I can't justify the expense for something I would rarely wear. I have black (probably reserved for funerals) charcoal (dark grey in one of my kilts), lovat blue, lovat green, blood red (burgundy) , bottle green and a sort of khaki.

I tend end to wear socks that completely contrast my kilt or at least are not the same as the main colour of my kilt. In full blown formal wear argyle look good but so do many one colour socks, of my selection My preferred choice for more formal events would be my blood red hose just because they are my favourites.

My hose are part merino wool and were purchased off eBay for around 15 a pair, at that price you can pick a couple of colours and mix and match for different events.

P.S. Just did a quick search, socks were Glenbeg, cost £15.95

About the expense, the bespoke tartan hose I got for my Drummond Of Perth kilt were a little over $100 as I recall, not a huge price leap from my selfcoloured Cheviot hose.

The tartan hose I have for my Isle Of Skye kilt were picked up secondhand for around the same price as my Cheviot hose.

But yes I just don't wear tartan hose very often.

For me, although I rarely have occasion to wear black tie, I tend toward off-white hose. Although I know many do not prefer this look, to me, it looks right. This is probably due to the fact that growing up, the only people I saw in kilts were in pipe bands which, at the time, seemed to uniformly wear white hose. Then, when I was in the military, I was used to seeing spats with kilts.
