About the expense, the bespoke tartan hose I got for my Drummond Of Perth kilt were a little over $100 as I recall, not a huge price leap from my selfcoloured Cheviot hose.

The tartan hose I have for my Isle Of Skye kilt were picked up secondhand for around the same price as my Cheviot hose.

But yes I just don't wear tartan hose very often.

For me, although I rarely have occasion to wear black tie, I tend toward off-white hose. Although I know many do not prefer this look, to me, it looks right. This is probably due to the fact that growing up, the only people I saw in kilts were in pipe bands which, at the time, seemed to uniformly wear white hose. Then, when I was in the military, I was used to seeing spats with kilts.
