    Cool You guys were right!

Hey rabble, wore my kilt out to its first true public appearance at my local college, worried to death about people pursuing and beating me (kidding, obviously, though it is East Texas after all... lol), but like one poster here after another has said, comments were indeed mostly positive, one of 'love the kilt' from a complete stranger fella, and the same sentiment expressed again by my Geology teacher, and no negative comments, though I got a few odd looks, lol. I have you guys to thank for showing me that kilting in modern day NA is and can be done, and for giving me the inspiration to do it myself.

Truly and sincerely, Thank You to all who make time for this forum, and for new fellows like myself. It, and you guys, are a true, beautiful treasure.

    Thanks and congrats!

Wow, your first kilted public appearance! I honestly can't remember mine. It would have been in 1975 or 1976, in a kilt my grandmother made for me.

Do you wear the tartan in your avatar? If so, I would think you would get more positive comments than usual, especially from the ladies, because that's the tartan that all the Outlander tartans appear to have been based on.

    Congratulations.

I've found Houston to be a very kilt-friendly location, even though I've never encountered anyone else wearing their kilt in public. So if you make it this far west, feel free to bring your kilt.

Congrats! Nicely done. Do you have photographic evidence of your first venture? My first outing was in a Mountain Hardwear Elkommando in 2013 or so. Then onto Utilikilts and then to traditional tartan kilts which are my preferred garment lately. Of the attention and comments that I receive, 99% are positive or neutral.

*revision: my VERY first outing was in the early 2000s in a Utilikilt Mocker that I wore three times or so but then forgot about it.

    Kilt on, dude.

You didn't say where in East Texas you are, but if you look in the phone book about 1/2 the names will be Scottish. I've lived in Old Security (between Conroe and Cleveland), Houston, Katy and Magnolia and never had any problems...even when I was teaching in Cold Spring, TX almost everyone was supportive (at least they were AFTER I explained it is a kilt, not a skirt).

Hey Richard! No, it was not the one in my profile pic, though I do intend to own a kilt in it one day... but alas, twas just a USA Kilts Casual Kilt in Irish Heritage that I wore. Very nice kilt, still. I have no complaints, other than that I mis-measured my length, and would like to shorten it by one and a half inches, lol.

Yes, Houston sounds very nice for kilting, judging by all the members that are from there and have good things to say, lol. I go down to visitmy brother a few times a year, next time, the kilt is for sure coming! He lives in Cypress, I believe.

I believe I do, somewhere, lol. Will have to post that pic here sometime! Are trad kilts better than utilikilts in most ways, IYO?

Ah, I live in Van, about an hour east of Dallas, and 40 minutes or so west of Tyler. Yeah I still have only got positive comments from people, feels very nice! Nice to see someone from the Greater ETX area! Most on here from TX are from Houston or Dallas areas, so cool!!

I would make sure before I had the kilt shortened- you can't put it back!

Thing is, a large percentage of American kilt-wearers have kilts that are too short.

Some order their kilts too short.

Others order their kilts correctly but after they wear them they think they're too long and have them shortened.

There's a guy in our pipe band who also plays in a local Service Pipe Band. He told me his Service band kilt was too long and he was looking for a kiltmaker to shorten it. (You shorten kilts from the top. It's complicated.)

When I saw him with his Service bandmates, he was the only one with a proper-length kilt!

I told him that and he said "I know. But I need to match the other guys."

That's an unfortunately common thing here in the USA.
