This is a great strategy. You don't even need to take much apart. Just cut the kilt horizontally right at the bottom of the fell and discard the stitched pleats part. That doesn't have useable fabric in it anyway because the pleats are cut out. Then just pull the tartan out straight, press it, and you're good to go. All you have to take out beyond that are the two facing edges!
