Thank you for all the replies, I really appreciate it.
I’m not into the reanacting. I got the great gilt idea from the “Kilted Bushcraft Highlander” on YouTube and really want to try hunting and bushcrafting in a great kilt.
I really really enjoy the weathered stewart hunting tweed and had contemplated a kilt in that but think the colours may be on the formal softer side than what I’m looking for. Although it may look really good as a great kilt when out in the woods.
I’ve looked at the ancient, large sett versions but nothing jumps out at me.
I did see these bracken stewart tartans today by loch carron and they really have my interest peaked.

I think the real problem in the amount of options I have and that it’s hard to visualize them.
Thanks again,
Kilted Doghdoir

Here being worn.

That looks a lot more like it. The major difference being that the one I have has fringe, and the opposite end of the belt is clearly designed for a brooch.

Drummer's plaid
This is the page were I got the name "drummer plaid". What they call a drummer plaid is what I have. Of course, I don't know if they are correctly using the name.

I think it's the nicest kilt fabric I've ever worn. It looks and feels terrific.
(I know opinions vary, and many people don't like tweed for kilts.)
I personally don't want a great kilt, but if I did this is the cloth I would use.
However Old Stewart in Ancient Colours is quite lovely, and would be a close second choice for me.

I think that this is just about the nicest tartan pattern that there is and it is on my "Buy" list as soon as the budgetary ducks have fallen into a straight line.
Those ancient U Nialls from Donegal were a randy bunch.
