That black Hunting sporran is so interesting!
If it's as old as it looks it would be the earliest black leather Day Dress sporran I've seen.
None of the catalogues I have, up through the 1960s, mention or illustrate black leather sporrans, neither do they appear in any photos I'm aware of prior to the 1970s.
But you never know! At any time a bespoke black leather sporran could have been made, though for what purpose I can't imagine. (If the sporran is vintage it was made pre-Kilt Hire and before there was such a thing as "semi-dress" sporrans.)
Just yesterday a piper friend told me how he had just died his vintage brown leather Hunting sporran black, and how perfectly the job came out. I was inwardly horrified that somebody would take a nice vintage sporran and turn it into a post-1970s Kilt Hire sporran.
