If I carried that around every day, I wouldn't need the weights that I use it with!

This is the clearest space in my home, and it's downright frigid and gray outside. So, the squat rack is the place for fashion shoots.

I don't know if it's laziness or what, but I've never bothered either.

These days that pocket is usually where I carry my phone. (I got a slimmer mobile phone than most because I can slip it into a jacket or waistcoat pocket.)

Not laziness I am sure OCR, particularly when we consider the attention to detail that you pay to your general kilt attire. Personally, I have always considered a handkerchief in the breast pocket a rather foppish accessory.

On the jackets I've gotten from USA Kilts (St. Kilda, then?) the breast pockets are sewn shut and my tailor assures me there's no pocket hidden behind the stitching.

I bought my Gaelic Themes tweed jacket/waistcoat at USA Kilts. The pockets are all sewn for shipping (pocket answer to basting stitches), but there are actual pockets behind the stitch

My assorted kilt jackets by Haggarts of Aberfeldy (now sadly ceased trading) over too many years to count, have functional pockets, ranging from "poachers pockets" to breast pockets and ticket pockets and so on, depending on the jacket, but I can't say that I can remember ever placing a handkerchief in the breast pocket of any of them. Although, I have on occasion hung a gold watch chain from the lapel button hole, above the breast pocket of a tweed jacket, with a rather nice Rolex pocket watch on the end of it.

You gents got me wondering about my most recent kilt jacket, Gaelic Themes, which I bought in 2025 from Pipers Hut. (As with most things at Pipers Hut it was significantly less expensive than other sources.)

Kilt jackets I've got in the past have had obvious basting stitches temporarily holding the outer breast pocket shut (only that one pocket, the others arriving un-basted). But on this new jacket the breast pocket appears to be permanently sewn shut.

Inspired by this conversation I just now got out that jacket and found out that if I reach into the inside breast pocket and feel around inside the lining I can feel the "bag" of that outer breast pocket.

Knowing that I got out the Seam Ripper and very carefully removed the stitches. They're not like usual basting stitches, seemingly meant to be permanent, but when I cut them all voila there was a functional pocket! And just wide enough for my mobile

I am late to this discussion, too late for Burn's Night, but thought it might help future discussions to post this photo taken last weekend at a talk I gave in Edinburgh. it shows the range of individuality of a group of long-time kilt wearers. No two jackets, sporrans or hose match yet each would be equally acceptable at a non-Black Tie evening event.
