What's interesting is that the newer long-link chain I got has those bulges from soldering the joins.
But the vintage ones I have don't.

What I don't understand is why that Piper Leathercraft sporran is nearly identical to my Nicoll Brothers sporran.
They used the same stamps on the body and targe.
Interestingly, the Nicoll Bros just let the targe piece overlap the body stamp, while Piper Leathercraft trimmed it.
(I was going to fix mine, doing a red liner, but I just looked and the cantle looks like it's riveted on, not using the standard hex nuts.)

I have noticed the same thing...
Vintage chains seem to be finished to a much higher standard, but some current makers take the time to clean and smooth the joints, like this solid brass version -
