They're British, but not Scottish, and the combination is disliked by many. I think it looks sharp, but I've never seen anyone who knows what traditional highland wear is agree, so take that as you will.

Just to clear up a common misconception:-

    The Scots, are also British

    The Welsh, are also British

The Northern Irish, are also British.

    The English are also British.

And I quite agree, a flat cap worn with the kilt looks absolutely awful!

My apologies. I didn't mean to imply Scots aren't British. Only that flat caps are a "whole of Britain" thing as opposed to a Scottish thing (I believe they originated in England and spread from there).

Not to worry, the vintage Mackie balmoral has arrived from eBay. Despite my normally wearing a 59, this 60 fits just fine. And now that I’ve gently hand washed it, it’s even clean (the water was light brown for the first go-round).

As requested, the final result from the wedding yesterday. Shortened the flashes and sporran chain, took more care with my tie knot (I used the St. Andrew knot), and wearing a balmoral rather than a flat cap. Some will still disapprove of the red shoes, but my partner loves them and, well, I live with her. She is rather Mother Nature dressed, partly because she performed the ceremony.

I think you look great, and the shoes look good too, even if they stray a bit from the conventions. What's the pin in your left lapel?

The pin is of Robert Burns. I saw it on eBay one day and liked the look of it, even if his head is slightly misshaped.

I got a big laugh out of that!

There should be a thread somewhere "portraits of famous historical figures with misshapen heads".
