I'm looking at this perhaps 2 weeks too late (and have no need for another bonnet), but I'm wondering what you think of the coyote fur dress sporran shown on that eBay page from the same seller.

That same seller (Jay's Big Junk) isn't currently selling any sporrans. Perhaps you are looking at a personalized recommendation.

That's a lot of kit for $150. And only six bucks shipping? Someone got a hell of a deal.

I didn't want to say anything until it arrived, because I like being superstitious and I didn't want to jinx it.
But I'm the one who bought it, and unfortunately, it turned out to be a scam.
I received a package with a queen sized cotton batting instead of the advertised items.

I've not bought ANYTHING on eBay for a LONG time, so I have no idea what your chances are. My guess is that were it simply a matter of "evidence" you'd be reimbursed, given that he sent you something that had NO relationship to what you ordered. But, as has already been noted, perhaps the biggest clue was the bizarrely low charge for shipping.

I just checked Macy's website. They have a few mattress pads that cost that much, new, but I cannot imagine the indignity of sleeping on that creepy substitute.

But, the seduction of scoring a real bargain is probably the second to last step in a successful scam, and when I first read this thread I DID peek at the offering and was captivated by a previously posted sporran that appeared under "similar items," priced so low that I might have taken a chance, too, but it's pretty likely that most people posting things for sale know EXACTLY what they're doing (ESPECIALLY the scammers).

As they used to say on the TV show NYPD Blue, "so sorry for your loss."

This may be naive of me, but any chance they simply sent you the wrong item by accident? I would think a scammer would not send anything at all. That, and it's a U.S. seller (a lot of scams come from overseas sellers) who has been on ebay for 25 years with a 100% feedback rating. Seems to me if they were so blatantly scamming people they would have been kicked off ebay a long time ago. Plus it looks like legit photos (i.e. not stock photos) in the listing so I'm thinking the seller could be in possession of said items (unless the photos were nicked from another listing).

Either way, I really hope you get it sorted out and let us know how it goes.

Ebay sellers have always been quick to give refunds if anything goes amiss, in my experience.

Sellers want to protect their Feedback record.

Even if the seller doesn't make things right (which I've never had happen) Ebay will step in, as long as you can send them evidence.

I've had a few sellers accidently send me the wrong thing over the years. As soon as I contact them they apologise and send me the right thing immediately.

The only time I've seen the Ebay process not work is if the seller somehow gets the buyer to agree to extending the delivery time past the Ebay-specified cutoff.

The reason a scammer would send something instead of nothing is so they can show eBay a delivery confirmation. Then, when the buyer says they received the wrong item, the scammer can claim the buyer is lying, and it becomes a "he said, she said" scenario that the scammer has a chance of winning.

The seller looks legitimate. Very high rating with 100% feedback. All photos look original with no matches on other sites that would suggest image reuse. My first thought was that a scammer recently stole the account credentials and was using the account's good reputation to commit fraud. However, when that happens, the account thief almost always begins creating many fake listings to maximize the number of sales they can get before the account is banned or recovered by the true owner. But in this case, the seller still only has a handful of listings.

I opened a dispute with the seller, and they said the package I received is not the one they shipped the kilt in. At first I thought this was gas lighting. But now I believe them.

The package I received has two shipping labels on it. One is the label for my address, and the other is for an address in Nevada, one state over from me. It's not an old label either, the tracking for it shows it was shipped from a nearby location about 30 minutes apart from when my package was shipped.

Here's what I think happened. My kilt was shipped to me, and the cotton batting was shipped to Nevada. Both packages arrived independently in the same shipping hub where they were bundled together by USPS in their equivalent of a "gaylord box" for transit to the next shipping hub. This is typical, and supported by the two tracking labels having different arrival times at the hub, but identical departure times (the gaylord box gets scanned, and the system updates the tracking for all packages that they bundled in it).

The label for my kilt came off and accidentally became attached to the cotton batting. This happened either during transit to the next hub (Salt Lake City) while the two packages were together in the gaylord box, or after the gaylord box was opened and the two packages were going through the sorting machine at the same time.

For departure, my label on the cotton batting happened to get scanned instead of its original label, so the cotton batting was accidentally delivered to me. Meanwhile, the kilt no longer has a label, so it will end up in a Mail Recovery Center. Again, this is supported by the tracking information for the cotton batting stopping at Salt Lake City; it was never scanned for departure, because it was accidentally delivered to me using the label from my kilt.

USPS told me I need to file a Missing Mail Search, but I cannot until 7 days have passed since the ship date. The seller says they shipped the kilt in a vibrant blue "Fiji Artisian Water" box, which is slick and may be why the label came off, but also may help in identifying the package.

So there's a decent chance the kilt will be recovered. I'm holding my breath.

If the kilt isn't recovered, then I need to get USPS to give me a written statement that the package they delivered to me isn't actually my package so I can show eBay I never received my order (because from their perspective, I did receive it). The delivery status from USPS really mucks things up. But, hopefully they find the kilt and I don't have to deal with that. The clock is ticking, because if USPS can't find it, then I need to resolve this with eBay before the return window closes.

I'll let you all know the outcome. Fingers crossed!
