    A few years ago in Wales, I gently, politely let a Welsh person know referring to a Canadian as "American" was akin to calling him an Englishman.

    that's pretty much the same as I heard it. (since there was a gap between the original and my reply, this is in fact about the pie for breakfast story)

    And don't those hats look awful! If any of you want to wear a flat cap with the kilt be my guest! If you want to poke fun at Jock about flat caps then carry on.............I can take it! All the enthusiasm for those dreadful things won't change my mind, or make you look sartorially splendid to my eye. The story of the " Emperor's New Clothes" springs to my mind, but you chaps carry on carrying on, wearing those awful things with the kilt! Whilst I and others politely laugh.
