I received my first kilt when I was 12, from my family. It was handed-down from a couple generations, but was cared-for like a museum relic. It's a HUGE reason why I'm so heavily in favor of a hand-sewn, wool kilt. Fashion comes and fashion goes... but quality last a LONG time.
I wore it often to the normal festivals and gatherings in Canada. I still have what MAY be one of the first denim kilts. My grandmother was a seamstress for Levi Strauss. A little extra fabric... a little extra time and voila. I'm sure that it was just a "wild hair" like some of the ones that I build now. Unfortunately, it fits the 14-year-old me and not wearable now.
Arise. Kill. Eat.
