My wife calls me a pessimist.

I respond by saying: "At least most surprises a pessemist gets are pleasant surprises."
One of my favorite sayings is thata pessimist is never dissapointed. He always expects the worst, then if it happens, he was prepared for it. If the outcome is positive, then the pessimist is pleasantly surprised.

A former romantic interest of mine was from Poland, and there was one phrase she used that confused me: "Disappointed in a good way." To this day I still dont know exactly how much sense it makes, but I get the gist. I prefer to think of myself as a realist, which means technically I'm slightly pessimistic. I see things more or less how they are, without assuming Deus Ex Machina will save us all. But that's just me.
