Hi, Ham!
While ordering, I wasn't asked whether or not I wanted the belt loops. In fact, I didn't know they were part of the jacket until it arrived! Since I don't wear a fly plaid, and I prefer a slightly less formal look, I did request that the epaulettes not be attached. Had I have known about the belt loops I probably would have passed on them as well given the fact that they come at the expense of that bottom silver button which you mentioned. That said, I do like the belt-on-jacket look and don't think the lack of bottom silver button when the jacket is worn sans belt is much of a detriment.
I have worn the jacket both ways and THOUGHT it looked fine when I placed the belt on my kilt...
