I agree that the kilt is what is needed to bring a man out of his pants for the first time. Once having taken that step though I think some of the other styles can be considered.
Being kilted for over a year now I've run into a few situations where a kilt is okay, but something else (not pants!) might be even better.
For example I am thinking of getting a Macabi riverskirt for sailing, because the material is superfast drying supplex nylon and it can be gathered at the knees into a kind of 'shorts'. Shorts with no crotch however, just material gathered at the knees. Still comfortable, dries fast, and even has pockets.
I'm also thinking about getting a sarong or two for taking to the beach. The lighter weight is going to be cooler and at the beach its most appropriate.
