I like to wear my UKs because I like to be different. I'm a student, and it's difficult to stand out in an environment as diverse as a California college campus; wearing "non-traditional" kilts does that in a way that traditional kilts would not... and it appeals to my "counter-culture" background (I grew up in the late seventies/early eighties California party scene).
