Huzzah! Curling! This really is about kilts now! Whew!
But what about caber-tossing, stone-throwing and weight-hefting? I think we'll have to spin-off our sports channels to about the level of ESPN-99 before we get those.
We've got the Genesee Valley Highlands Gathering this weekend and ... (leaves to check listings) ... nope, no curling. But they have stones, hammers and cabers, both pro and ameteur competition. Now that ameteur caber toss is appealing ... maybe I'll enter, just for the spectacle of my internal organs exploding out my back as I attempt to lift the caber. I'd make the front page of the Local section, and maybe even get a few sympathy points in the competition.
We used to get CJOH over cable. We were always astonished at how quiet Canadian TV was compared to the USA. ("See, Mom, TV CAN be quiet!") But we never saw any curling. No Highland sports of any type, in fact. That was the '80's. Canadian TV has since, sadly, turned up the volume.
