As for your question, the laces on my brogues pass through a hole in the center of the tassle and hold it in place with a knot that is too large to fit back through the hole. By undoing the knot, I can remove the tassle. I'm sure you'd have spotted something that easy if your laces were constructed the same way, so I'm afraid I'm not much help.
